Deutsch Kurzhaar vom Sturmland

2009 Planned Deutsch Kurzhaar vom Sturmland Breedings:

I am currently in the process of selecting the best possible male Deutsch Kurzhaar to match with Minka vom Schnepfenstrich (See Minka below).

My policy is not to breed a vom Sturmland Deutsch Kurzhaar to any Deutsch Kurzhaar that I have not personally hunted behind. That means I have to do some traveling and some hunting to find what I am looking for. I mind niether but both take time.

Minka will be tested in the November VGP (Utility Test) and I expect her to do well. Her next possible breeding season after that test is likely to be in March 2009. If I have found what I believe to be the correct male Deutsch Kurzhaar by that time and every thing works out, we may have puppies available in late May or June.

I will update this information when progress in that direction is made.

Minka vom Schnepfenstrich:

If I was allowed only to mention one of Minka's attributes it would be her phenomenal temperament. Minka is as calm a DK as you'll likely find and that is enhanced further by her desire to please. She is truly a pleasure to hunt with and live with. In fact the reason that I purchased Minka as a puppy was predominantly because of reading a rather lengthy litter notice complimenting the great calmness of the Sire of the expected litter, "Rocky vom Neuarenburg". That notice can be viewed in the Articles Section of this website.Calmness and temperament come way before looks and pedigrees in my book.

Since I have owned at least one dog that was at the other end of the spectrum with respect to calmness and trainability, I was not looking to further punish myself with a lot of wasted time and effort trying to put lipstick on a pig. Minka was simply the answer to my prayers.

In our German performance based breeding and testing system, there are many things that an unsettled dog is not likely to do well including blood tracking, searching methodically and following scent trails. More importantly good obedience is much easier to obtain and enforce when a dog is calm and willing to please. I am lucky to have Minka and proud to hunt with her.

2008/2009 Plans: Minka and I are working towards completion of the VGP this testing season. She was almost ready as early as last fall but I decided an additional few months of maturity would give her more confidence and help her to achieve her full potential as a versatile dog.

Minka was Designate V1 of the female dogs at the NAKP Zuchtschau (Breed Show) The comments of the two German judges: "We can find no faults with this dog!".

Additionally Minka is entered in the 20 hour and the 40 hour blood tracking test as well as a retrieving reliability test (BTR); all scheduled for this coming February. I expect her to do well in those tests this year. She is simply a pleasure to work with.

Ayla has turned out to be a really nice dog. She has a lot of drive and a sweet temperament. Ayla completed the HZP October 2008 with 185 pts. She has also been assigned a "V" conformation rating in an adult Zuchtschau. I plan to continue working with Ayla to get her ready for the VGP utility test in Fall 2009.

Ayla has a great nose and does a very nice search in the field. Her pointing is very good and she is coming into her own as a good water dog. I expect her to make good progress as she matures.

I have no immediate plans to breed Ayla but may begin to consider a breeding in late 2009.
